Getting drunk is a waste of time and brain cells. It also ruins many an occasion. Alcoholism is prevelant in my family and though I was an idiot about drinking for many years, I don't drink very much at all anymore. I do wish pot was legal. My mom went through horrible bouts during chemo where she was in so much pain and couldn't eat and pot would have helped her, but she couldn't get it legally here.

I believe whether someone gets high or drunk is there own business. As long as it's done in a way that it doesn't affect anyone but that individual. But, as already stated in the comments, this isn't always the case. I would like to a law in place that allows drinking/smoking in a residence. But, if you decide to step out that door and put other peoples lives in danger you should be given a harsh sentence. Not 5 years in jail but life, maybe even castration.

I have driven drunk a couple of times. The last time I did, I fell asleep at the wheel. I was woken up by another car honking at me as I was swerving into their lane. The entire time I was driving, I was asking myself why I was driving. I was/am ashamed of myself for that. But that was my choice and if I had hurt someone, I would have expected someone to throw my ass in jail and forget about me. Someone putting someone else's life in danger should not be tolerated.

I think it's ridiculous to demonize pot and getting trashed by alchohol is a 'normal' thing to do. My fiance got killed in a drink-and-drive accident. The problem is that the government enjoyes the taxes on alcohol to much to ban it.

No I don't think getting drunk is acceptable at all.

When I was a kid my mothers and fathers brothers were all heavy drinkers and MEAN drunks - fighting, hitting their wives and generally being quite belligerent.

My mothers sister and her husband were also killed by a drunk driver (with one eye who shouldn't have been driving having just lost his license the week before due to drinking).

My parents were not big drinkers at all. My dad would have a few beers on the weekend and any other alcohol consumption would take place on special occasions or holidays like Thanks giving or Christmas.

My parents weren't against drinking, but I guess they tried to teach their kids how to consume alcohol properly. Even as a young child of 5 or 6 I was allowed to have a very small glass of wine with dinner (Christmas, birthdays, holidays- not daily!). I guess they wanted us to know the effects of alcohol before we reached an age where we would start experimenting. By the time I was a teenager and my friends started stealing booze from their parents liquor cabinets to experiment I already knew drinking wasn't that big a deal.

I did experiment a bit with my friends and yes I drank too much on occasion. However having seen some of the worst of what alcohol can do to a person I've always been fairly careful about drinking.

These days I'll have a drink only once a month or so. Alcohol hits me hard so I'm tipsy after only a drink or two. A little buzz is ok, but being stupid drunk isn't.

Last week at 2 in the morning I watched a cab drop off a man across the street from my house. The man, when he finally managed to *crawl* out of the cab, could barely walk. He was staggering so badly and falling down every few feet that I stood and watched him until I couldn't see him any longer in case he needed help (like falling in the busy street).

Now that's stupid drunk. What good does it do anyone to get that drunk? At least he or perhaps the bar owner had the sense to get a cab rather than get behind the wheel of a car!

I know too many alcoholics to answer with decent verbage. However, I believe pot should not be demonized. Most pot smokers are passive and happy go lucky with no harm to anyone. Alcoholics, most of the time, behave badly causing harm to other humans.... my vote is to legalize pot and let the world find peace and love!

I never got drunk and don't intend to. I never had one sip of alcohol in my life and I'm 54! Obviously, I don't think it's acceptable to get drunk. No good comes from it but often times harm. Families are destroyed sometimes because of the effects of alcohol.

The Question is Getting Drunk Acceptable? NO, it doesn't matter what is the reason. Drinking socially in moderation is acceptable IMO.

I think that alcohol is okay, as long as you know your limits and can do it responsibly. Unfortunately, not many people know their limits.

There's a lot of peer pressure that comes from social drinking. You are expected to have a certain amount and act a certain way. Too many people give into this pressure and thye end up completely trashed.

I think that getting drunk once in a while is acceptable, as long as a person can hold their liquor and not get themselves in trouble. It's the people that really shouldn't drink safely but do it anyway that are the problem. That and those that drink and then get behind the wheel.

I really think that demonizing weed is wrong. We don't demonize tobacco or alcohol, and they kill an awful lot of people each year. However, the government has a vested interest in both booze and cigarettes, so they convince the people that both are ok. The people of this country really don't have a say anymore. Government rules all.

You know this is a really interesting point you raise. I had a mate a while ago come over to spend the night. We went out and he ended up drinking himself into such a stupor he puked up just outside our house when we got home (at least it was not inside).

It is funny tho, I really lost a lot of respect for the guy, not only because he embarrassed himself but also because he got angry at one point and physically hurt me.

Also I believe that people are drinking too young and far to much. I see young teens drinking themselves close to needing hospitalisation far too often (and in Australia this has recently been brought up as a country wide health issue).

Finally as for the argument of why are pot smoker's demonised and excessive alkeymahol drinkers arent. I cannot answer that, societies weird way of classification methinks.
