Smoking weed: Acceptable yes or no?

WeedFirst I would like to say that I don’t do drugs; in fact I hate them. But… there are always situations in which you get a different point of view.

A friend of mine smokes pot on a very regular basis. Normally I would not hang out with people who do drugs, but in my eyes weed is relatively harmless. My friend does not smoke weed to get high, but mainly to control his pain. I won’t get into details, but he’s in a lot of pain and there’s not really a treatment for what he has. So in his case I don’t really have a problem with him smoking weed.

I have a total different view on hard drugs and it’s not what I want to talk about now. My question to you is do you think that smoking weed is acceptable?

    Only for terminal conditions.
Its too easy to lead to other drugs
People who are terminal and will die deserve to die pain free

I think smoking weed is acceptable under certain circumstances as in pain control. Otherwise I am not for it, but would not get vocal about it.

I think smoking pot for pain control is acceptable. Regardless, I think people should concern themselves more with why people drink alcohol. Seems there’s a lot out there just looking to get trashed, yet it’s perfectly legal and acceptable. Yet pot smokers are demonized, go figure.

I think this is a controversial topic that you will not get totally honest answers from people. I’m certain that people are going to come from the premise that pot is an illegal substance but if it were legal, how would their responses change (honestly).
My personal view is that pot should be legal just like alcohol and the government should tax the hell out of it but that won’t happen because our government can’t control pot like they can alcohol.
Alcohol is as bad if not worse than pot (in it’s purest form), don’t kid yourself.

My husband suffers the effects of his cancer every single day and wouldn’t even consider smoking pot because it’s illegal - that sucks, he shouldn’t have to feel like that!

You know what gripes me about a question like this? People who usually answer - present company excluded of course - are coming from a pre-supposed mountain of morality.

Let me now speak for myself.

I cannot possibly be an expert on people, their situations [medical] or their philosophies, or realities. For me to say “Well it’s okay if they smoke it like this this and that” I have to put myself in a position of God or that one of moral superiority.

Weed smoking may be okay for you or him or her or them. But it is not okay for me. It doesn’t do well with me and I am a recovering alcoholic anyway - I sense that if I *did* ever enjoy weed that I would simply start substituting weed for trying to solve my problems - thus using it like I used to use alcohol.

I used to know these two guys who smoked it 8 times a day and all I can say about them is that I didn’t like to be around the people.

However. Then there is one of my closest friends who smokes weed sporadically. She has always left the room when she’s done it - knowing my path of sobriety - and I STILL love being around her because she’s not a numskull when she smokes it. [ie, It reacts well with her.] Oh and she doesn’t do it for physical pain but for emotional I would imagine as she had a really shitty childhood.

Can I judge her for this? Absolutely not. Do I think it’ll ever lead her to heroin or crack? No. LoL She’s been a pot smoker for 20 some years and the anti-depressants and other pharma meds she is on don’t seem to be able to keep up.

In short, I would dare not put myself in such a position of moral absolutism in which to judge ANYone for what they do when it involves only their emotional, mental or physical bodies. It goes against the nature of what I believe God to be.

Good thought provoker! [I have never been able to exercise my feelings into words as I have been able to today...so thank you for this opportunity!]

It is not a question of simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ It really depends on the reason behind smoking weed. Like for the case of your friend. He is smoking weed because of his pain and for Samsara’s friend, she is smoking weed because of her emotion pain. In both case, it may be deemed acceptable. There will also be time when the use of certain drug may also be deemed acceptable. In the case of my father, he was in the last stage of his cancer and towards the end, the doctor had to prescribe morphine for him. We were shocked when we heard that the doctor was giving him that. We only learned later that there was no other drug that could help him then other than morphine. Smoking weed is not acceptable only when it is being abused; just as in drugs abuse.

I think that smoking weed to control pain is perfectly acceptable. Who are we to say that that is not allowed? People should not have to live in pain all the time. In some countries they prescribe that as medicine.

Abusing it, just like any other drug or alcohol is an entire different story.
