Rocky Sixpack

Rocky BalboaDH and I were talking about movies the other day when we started talking about the latest Rocky movie. When I told him that I had only seen Rocky IV he was shocked. He thought that the Rocky movies should be watched by everyone. To prove his point he decided that I should be properly ‘educated’ and made me watch all six Rocky movies on Sunday.

I have to say that I think that the Rocky movies are timeless. It’s not just about boxing, but mainly about love, about how to deal with obstacles, being a stronger person, etc. What I have learned most from the Rocky movies is that Rocky Balboa was a lousy boxer. I mean really… I don’t think I have seen him once keep his hands up to defend himself. He was like an easy punch bag. In real life he would have been knocked out ten times during a fight. But it isn’t real life - it’s a movie! I guess it’s the story behind the fights is what counts; never give up and as long as you fight with your heart you’ll be victorious in the end.

Even though the movies were very predictable I have truly enjoyed watching the Rocky Sixpack. Have you seen the Rocky movies and what did you think of them?

As not just a sports fan, but a fan of sports movies as my wife will attest to, I have to agree that the Rocky movies are timeless and an inspirational story.

We have basically a drifter in Balboa, with no real ambition or aspiration, working as a leg breaker in Philadelphia, a “collector” of debts if you will. Through them all, we see him find himself, and direction, and do things he never thought possible.

To me, the best one is Rocky III, with Hulk Hogan as Thunderlips and Mr. T as the brash, brutal Clubber Lang. Losing Mickey slowed Balboa, and really took him off his game, same as we see all the time in sports.

I have to ding your DH for making you watch Rocky V. Any self respecting fan of the series acknowledges Rocky V about as much as one would want to own up to having been a big fan of disco. I personally avoid Rocky V like the plague whenever it is on.
